What To Consider Before Buying

There are some things to know before you narrow down the right product that will suit your needs. There are so many different types on the market, from cordless to corded, and with many different length settings and attachments.

So to make it simple; when you are looking at these remarkable facial hair trimmers you will have to consider these four things:

  • Your beard length: Do you maintain a stubble look or a short to medium beard? Or are you rocking a nice full beard that ranges from 10mm and beyond? Check the length settings that the products come with! We list the full information below.
  • The purpose of the trimmer: Is it for your beard only? Or do you need it for head shaving and whole body use?
  • The features it comes with: Does it come with a vacuum function? What about a pop-up nose and ear hair detailer?
  • Cordless or Corded?: Can you use it without a cord? How long does it take for a full charge, and also does it have a quick charge function.

Remember, if you are looking to be close shaven rather than maintaining the growth of your beard, than these are not the right products for you. Instead, what you’re looking for is an electric shaver so check out our detailed guide if that is what you want to achieve.

Anyway, after you take these things into consideration, you are ready to view our extremely detailed beard trimmer reviews, which puts each product under a microscope to help you choose the perfect one for the foreseeable future.

We have made a chart to help you easily compare and contrast the best beard trimmers so that the ultimate choice you make takes into account every category that is both relevant and necessary.

But wait, there’s more.

There is one more Remington model that we have saved for last because it received our highest grade, pounding the rest of the competition in almost all the grading factors. It is so good that it needs to be studied in greater detail.

So here we go, Malegroomings brings you what our tests have shown to be the overall best beard trimmer for men.

#1. Remington MB4045A The Beardsman Trimmer

best beard trimmer 2018

  • The most well built and long lasting professional beard trimmer upon our tests.
  • Portable with an impressive Lithium ion powered battery: 4 hour charge for 120 minutes of run time.
  • Paramount self-sharpening and oiling titanium coated blades that last very long and trim evenly.
  • Premium finish that is curved for conducive ergonomics.

  • Also includes a pop-up detail trimmer for those tight spots, as well as a beard brush and scissors.
  • Washable with quick release function of blade which reduces cleaning time significantly.
  • Come with a warranty for 60 days money back guarantee.
  • Overall Rating: 9.9/10

This is without a doubt the best cordless beard trimmer currently on the market. This is a fairly new product that was released around 2 years ago and it was about time. It comes with the usual wide array of length settings that Remington offers, and the design and durability are top notch. Factoring in everything, this is unanimously the top choice for beard clipping that money can buy.

Why? Lets compare the top 3 choices and you will see.

Firstly, the Panasonic ER-GB80-S beard clipper is actually our newest addition in 2016, and it is improved from the ER-GB40-S Milano, the lower model. It was the exact improvements that we were looking for because the Panasonic Milano is a great product, especially for the price. The Panasonic ER-GB80 has 39 built in length settings, three comb attachments, a cleaning brush, and a pop up detail trimmer.

Just like the Wahl Slate, both these products have the capability to be full body groomers that can trim or shave pretty much everything, anywhere on your body. The MB4045A does not come with the attachments to allow for full body grooming, but it does have 27 total length settings that can facilitate all beard sizes and even trim down other parts of your body if need be.

Performance wise, the Remington MB4045A wins an extremely close race as the blades and motor were just so powerful together that they literally shredded the hairs like a hot knife through butter during our tests on all types of beards; short, long, thin and thick.

Remington MB4045A
Remington Mb4045A has sharp blades

The blades do not tug at all on your beard when you oil them before each use. This is an important step that you should not forget because you will unfairly misjudge the quality of the trimmer when the issue is instead that you are not using the required blade oil.

This is especially true if you have a medium to long beard because your hairs are more ridged and therefore harder to cut.

The ER-GB80-S is a great product, and would have been absolutely flawless had it not been for a couple of minor issues. Firstly, the head was designed to be a bit wide. This could be a real issue for some people, primarily those men with smaller heads, and we are not sure why Panasonic made it that way.

The second issue is that if you have a thick beard, the hair may get stuck inside the blades and constrain the power that the trimmer holds. You need to constantly clean it and this can get tedious after a while.

Although, it must be said that you should be cleaning your shaving tools after every use regardless, so this should not even be labeled as a flaw in the first place. Still, we feel that it is worth mentioning so that you can understand that cleaning is critical to proper upkeep of these products.

Aside from that, the ER-GB80 is a high quality beard trimmer that is built well and should not break down on you. All three attachments are stellar when it comes to durability, and the cutting blades are one of the strongest that you can find.

Overall, the Wahl 9864 Slate used to be our #1 option but was recently moved down due to availability. This is not a knock on the product, because it is aesthetically crafted and holds more than its own weight in terms of power and durability, and actually over-performs when looking at the features and the usability combined.

For starters, the Wahl Slate does not have a built in scroll wheel for different lengths but rather uses several comb attachments that act as external length settings. This is just what Wahl has always done, and it works for them so why change it?

wahl slate 9864 with all attachments
The beautiful Wahl Slate and everything that comes with it.

The hair guide combs on the Wahl 9864 Slate make it very easy to shave your head to whatever length you need.

Because of the powerful and innovative carbon and stainless steel blades, you will get such a smooth trim that parallels the one that only the most expensive corded trimmers provide.

Do you want to change things up and get a close shave instead? Or perhaps completely trim down your chest hair? No problem! The highly effective system-3 foil shaver attachment will shred down your hair to an electric razor-like closeness. This attachment actually impressed us a lot, but keep in mind that you need to be cleaning the clogged hairs to keep it working smoothly.

And lastly, both the rotary nose hair trimmer and detail attachment are nice additions that help you trim down those nose hairs and other hard to cut places. This will make your cheek and jaw line perfectly straight to highlight whatever style you are going for as well.

The Remington MB4045A on the other hand is meant for one simple thing; beard trimming. It might not have all the bells and whistles in terms of attachments and features like the Panasonic and Wahl do, but this is a beard trimmer guide after all and it does a superb job of giving you what you need for just that purpose.

One of the primary reasons that the Remington wins a close race between the top 3 beard trimmers is because of the price. It is the lowest of the lot and it does not slack in terms of power, length settings and cutting ability.

If you are looking for a reliable, formidable, and well built beard trimmer that you can trust for a long time – then this is the one for you.

The Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 is also a great choice for a relatively inexpensive whole body trimmer, but it does lack a few key things that the top 3 choices naturally have; more length settings and a full sized foil shaver that works well.

Choose the Remington MB4045A, grab yourself some clipper oil and don’t look back.

How Are They Graded?

Although we have chosen only trimmers that get the job done exceptionally well on our top 7 list, there were several duds that did not make the cut for a cornucopia of reasons. The basis of selection and ultimately the overall rating that each of the top 7 beard trimmers received has been determined by testing these and many others that didn’t make the list and grading them based on the following factors:

  1. Battery PowerHow long do you need to charge the battery and how long does it last after charging? Also, does the battery run into problems in the future?
  2. Quality of Blades: This is perhaps the most important factor; the better and more potent the blades, the higher the grade. Some things we looked at include: How well do the blades cut stray hairs? How clean does it pass on the jaw and cheek line? Do the blades need oil to work well? Our beard trimmer reviews weigh the quality of the blades heavily.
  3. Ergonomic Shape: We want the design to be comfortable and easy to hold, without slipping while we are in the shower for the waterproof ones! The usability of the product is always a key aspect when comparing the best from the worst.
  4. Usability: The usability is a very important factor and one that has many parts to it. For example, does the trimmer cut very close? Does it work well on hard to reach places like under the nose and around the jaw? Are the features working well on it? How easy is it to actually change the different attachments and do any issues arise? Is it fully washable? This is essentially an overall view of the products and how convenient, as well as how durable they are.
  5. Price: The price is an obvious one. You don’t want to pay too much for something that isn’t potent and worth the price, so that is why all the selections above are actually perfect in the ratio of price and effectiveness.

So now that you know how we tested and graded our products, let’s compare them and go over some of the flaws.

These are the “small things” that we found out while testing these products and they are worth noting in order to help you narrow down your final choice.

Beard Trimming Cutting Lengths Explained

Generally speaking, there are 3 types of beards: short ( including stubble ), medium, and long. When you are choosing the perfect product for your facial hair, you need to make sure that the cutting lengths are conducive to the type of beard you are growing.

We have thoroughly detailed information on the cutting lengths and attachments that these phenomenal beard trimmers come with in the comparison chart above, so be sure to choose one that fits you well.

For a guideline, refer to the recommendations below:

For short beards: Anywhere from 0.5mm which is a very short stubble to 4mm which is a nice long stubble look.
For medium beards: Anywhere from 5mm to 12mm usually constitutes a medium beard.
For long beards: Anywhere from 13mm to 25mm is where most long beards tend to be. Only a couple of trimmers go above 20mm, but you do have choices!

Keep in mind that just because a product has cutting lengths all the way to 25mm, does not necessarily mean it will have a wide array of choices for people with short beards. This advice is mostly for people new to buying a trimmer, and after you own your first one you will pretty much understand and know which lengths you require if you decide to replace or upgrade in the future.

Now, let’s look at a common misunderstanding in the male grooming world and how you can avoid a potential pitfall.

Beard Trimmers vs Stubble Trimmers

This is a bit of a misunderstood concept for most guys, because while these two can be synonymous, it is not always the case. A good stubble trimmer will always have length settings that are conducive to reducing a beard down to a healthy 0.2-3 cm, but a normal trimmer will not always have enough settings for achieving the perfect stubble.

As far as 5′ o clock shadow goes, the length generally ranges anywhere from 0.2-1mm. You need to make sure the product you choose has these capabilities or you will not be satisfied. A stubble trimmer will usually be able to get you that manly 5′ o clock shadow look, as well as a flowing medium stubble.

The Philips Norelco BT7215 is a great example of this. It has several stubble length settings going as low as 0.5mm, however it also extends up to 10mm which is good for a small to medium size beard. Other products out there might not have stubble lengths, and the one and only option you have is to trim with the exposed blades at ~0.5mm.

So all in all, if you are interested in rocking a stubble look permanently, grab one of the products on the list that have multiple length settings under 3mm.

A Deeper Look At The List And Some Flaws

While were testing the best beard trimmers listed above, we noticed a trend of slight flaws that were present on a lot of them. This could of been us just nitpicking, but it seemed like before the Remington MB4045A, Wahl Slate 9864 and Panasonic ER-GB80-S came out, most trimmers had very apparent flaws that kept them from perfection. And that is what we will discuss here, along with a product or two that was once on our list of the top trimmers, but was subsequently removed.

Durable Wahl 9854
Still working well after 3 years.

Starting with the Wahl products, the Wahl 9864 Slate is our choice for the best beard trimmer for men with thick hair because of the various combs that go up to 25mm and the ardent power of the motor and blades. Essentially, if you have a medium to long beard that is thick and coarse, the Slate will do the best job in providing you with a precisely even trim.

However, where it lacks is for short beards that require a 4mm setting. The combs skip over the 4mm increment and it may be a problem for some people, however there is a simple trick that can solve this issue. Pop in your 3mm comb and simply shave downwards instead of upwards and you will get a 4mm trim.

Overall, it is the top product in the vast arsenal of Wahl beard trimmers and is incredibly dependable because of how well it is built.

Next up is the lower model of the 9864, the Wahl 9854 Lithium Ion, and it is a very good beard clipper for the price which actually makes it our top value choice. The combs it comes with are good enough for short, medium, and semi-long beards and you should have no problem getting enough power to trim your facial hair down.

You will probably notice that the motor on this is loud when compared to the others, however this does not seem to be much of a big deal unless you are afraid of waking people up in the morning. Aside from that, we should also mention that it comes with a handy travel pouch that makes it conveniently portable, especially for traveling.

Moving on to the Philips Norelco products, we begin with the fairly new Philips Norelco BT7215 Series 7200. This is a bittersweet model because the 7300 was discontinued and it was one of our favorites by far. The 7200 is a nice upgrade, which comes with a more improved vacuum function that sucks up the hair as you are cutting it.

This feature works fairly well, and you will see around 80% of your hairs being sucked into the vacuum, which makes for much easier cleaning after you are finished. The highlight of the BT7215 is actually the new and innovative lift and trim technology. The way this works is that as it passes through your face, it lifts and aligns each individual facial hair so that it cuts more effectively.

Overall, the 20 built-in length settings are convenient and cover beards from a range of 0.5mm to 10mm. These length settings make it a great beard trimmer for medium beards, but we would absolutely not recommend it for long ones that require over 10mm settings.

The last Norelco we have on the list is the Philips Norelco MG7750 Multigroom 7000, which is a very solid option because it comes with significantly strong steel blades, while still boasting one of the more ergonomic designs out there. The blades are fairly sharp and potent, although not the best, but they still do get the job done very well except on the really long, full beards ( so if that is you, just avoid this product ).

The highlight of the MG7750, however, is definitely evident in the name. It truly is a ‘multigroomer’ that can trim the hair off just about every part of your body. We just would of liked it more if it had a bit more length settings for the beard, but for the most part, it covers stubble up to longer beards at 16mm.

The older 7100 model included built in length settings that covered a wider spectrum, however the trade off was one thing we really disliked; the plastic guard. This new Multigroom 7000 model includes reinforced fiberglass material on the 14 guards and it makes them astronomically more durable than before.

The BT7215 on the other hand has a problem with the guards. Because they are made of plastic, they will obviously feel flimsy to some extent. With proper care however, you should not have any problems so keep that in mind when you are inserting and removing those guards.

By no means should you be pressuring them when popping them in and taking them out. This is about having the right technique, not about the power you put into it ( an important life lesson there! ).

And that is really it for the Philips Norelco trimmers.

MB4045 is easy to clean
The MB4045 is extremely easy to clean

Next is the lone ranger, the Remington MB4045A. The Remington brand is long known for its masculinity, and this exceptional beard trimmer is no stranger to that. The MB4045 is nicknamed the Beardsman, and deservedly so because you get a nice brush and pair of scissors with your purchase.

That is a nice plus, and also inadvertently proves that the real gem behind the Remington MB4045 is that it is the best beard trimmer for long beards. This is especially useful if you are looking for a beard trimmer longer than 18mm in regards to length settings, which not many of them go that far. The Remington Mb4045 goes up to 25mm!

The ergonomic design is both sleek and manly, while staying true to the Remington brand by being extremely durable. The XL-length trimming comb was made with the modern lumberjack in mind.  The only issue that you may encounter with this product is that the battery needs to be well maintained, so do not overcharge it or it might die out on you.

There are actually 2 models for this product, and they are labeled as A and B. The MB4045B model is a bit cheaper and the only difference is that it does not have the titanium coated blades like the MB4045A does, as well as it does not have the copper finish but rather a platinum colored one. All in all, we recommend spending the minor difference and grabbing the better, longer lasting titanium coated blades model that we feature here.

Lastly are the Panasonic beard trimmers, and they are quite exceptional in their own way. Firstly, the ER-GB40-S is another great value choice and is great on sensitive skin as you will read below. A huge issue it has is that the Ni-MH battery takes far too long ( 15 hours ) to charge, so for that reason we have removed it from the list and replaced it with the newer ER-GB60-K that charges in just an hour.

The Panasonic ER-GB60-K is incredible however and is our choice for the best beard trimmer for short beards. The blades are honed so precisely at 45 degrees, that it can rip the thickest of beards with ease. It comes with 2 attachments that are utilized for your hair and your beard, going up to 20mm.

For that reason, the ER-GB60-K, along with the upper echelon ER-GB80-S, are two powerful contenders for being crowned the supreme beard trimmer and you should not hesitate to pick either of them.

The one and only issue, which is minor, is that the heads might be a little too wide as we stated above. If you have a small head, simply avoid the Panasonic’s.

If you are overwhelmed by all the information on this page and still unsure of which product to choose, we still have you covered. We have made a recommendation chart awarding trimmers for what they are best at in order to assist you depending on what type of beard you have and what you value the most.

Take into account that any of these products listed above can do a great job for most types of beards, however this is more of the specific strength that they have, in which they shine.

Remember, do not focus too much on this chart because it is not the be all, end all. For example, a lot of these trimmers are great for giving you that rugged stubble look, but the Remington MB4045 just happens to be ideal for it.

Furthermore, while the Wahl 9864 might be a high end beard clipper for long beards, all the other products except for the Norelco BT7215 work great for longer beards as well.

This is because of the ultra short length settings the BT7215 comes with, as the highest one is only 10mm. All in all, the choice is ultimately up to you, but we are sure that you will like any of these high quality products that we featured above.

There are plenty of products on the market, many that are actually new and that try to catch the younger crowd with better aesthetics. We do not feature most of those because what they make up in terms of looks, they lack where it really matters; in performance and attachments for more length settings.

So to recap, all of our beard trimmer reviews are the ones that made the cut. They beat out the competition and deserve to be featured.

Anyway, lets now take a look at a particular trimmer that is designed for excelling at stubble trimming.

Which is The Best Stubble Trimmer?

Perhaps the most peculiar trimmer we tested, the Philips Norelco BT9285 with it’s patented laser technology is actually our choice for the best stubble trimmer for men. If you are looking for a great stubble trimmer for 5 o`clock shadow, this is definitely a proper choice.

Now to get into more detail, while the laser does look really cool and can probably assist you in one way or another as a contractor, it does not have much of a practical use in terms of grooming your face.

Trying to position it in a way that would be very accurate is very difficult because you are trimming upwards ( where the laser doesn’t aim so well ).

If you were trimming downwards ( where the laser is actually very accurate ), it would be a very ingenious feature but it does not really help you much except for the occasional detailing from it’s dual side or maybe even trying to get a rough estimate of your cheekline. You will simply find yourself never using the laser except when showing it off to your buddies.

Now that isn’t necessarily a flaw than a useless feature, however the click wheel that comes with it definitely is instead. It is pretty difficult to clean the click wheel if you have thick growth as the hairs get trapped inside. With that said we don’t really recommend it for anything other than stubble or short beards.

Speaking of which, the blades work fairly well for short beards, and the 0.2mm incremental length settings from 0.4 to 2mm make it a very attractive option for those with short beards. The main issue as to why this didn’t make our top 7 list, however, is that it is a bit too expensive because of the laser gimmick.

You can find better overall products for a significantly lower price, however if stubble is all you’re after, this has by far the most settings to accommodate you.

Now lets move on. We know there are plenty of men out there with sensitive skin. This is a big issue that requires careful choosing when it comes to products that touch the skin on your face, so let’s give you 1 clipper that is ideally designed for men with sensitive skin.

Best Beard Trimmer For Sensitive Skin

Panasonic Milano ER-GB40S-S
The Panasonic Milano before unwrapping. The blades are great for sensitive skin.

When you have sensitive skin, there’s a chance that using a razor only leaves you feeling itchy and sporting a rash, right? Well don’t panic.

If you are one of the unfortunate men that suffer from hyper sensitive skin, we strongly recommend that you choose the wet and dry functioning Panasonic Milano ER-GB40-S. After our tests, it has stood up as very conducive to this type of skin and it does a remarkable job of trimming without causing the menial bumps and reddening from occurring that some other clippers or razors would give you.

While it is no longer on our top list, it is still a great product and worthy of being a choice for those with sensitive skin. The reason it has been removed from the top 7 is because of the battery power and the atrocious length of recharge time ( 15 hours for 50 minutes of use ).

Regardless, Panasonic boasts the Milano’s potent hypo-allergenic blades and they have every right to do so. One of our testers has super sensitive skin and every trimmer he used during testing caused at least some type of shaving bumps or burns, except the Panasonic Milano.

Feedback that we have received also suggests the same exact thing: If you have sensitive skin of any nature and are worried about irritation occuring, such as acne or redness, than this is the perfect choice for you. The newly added Panasonic ER-GB80-S also has similar hypo-allergenic blades that minimize tugging, but it is more expensive and more powerful as well.

Another option you have is the Braun Cruzer 6, which also has more forgiving blades that are softer on the skin while cutting. The Cruzer did not make our list however because the performance was not up to par with the rest of the products that made our top 7 list.

Of course, you also need to have a solid routine and proper technique while trimming your beard to be completely successful in avoiding any harm done to your skin, so just don’t forget that and rely solely on the product itself. In any case, all of the top beard trimmers we have listed do just fine for sensitive skin as long as you do have a proper technique, however they might be a bit abrasive for people who are on the more extreme side of sensitive.

Frequently Asked Questions

This section will cover some popular questions that we often are asked and have to reply individually to. We hope this helps you in your search for right beard trimmer, so refer here if you have any of the following questions.

Which is the Best Beard Trimmer in India?

Different countries have different models, and India being one that doesn’t have all the ones available in the USA especially. So to answer this question, there is 1 standout product that has over 23,000 reviews and a very high standard of quality:

1. Philips Norelco Cordless trimmer for Men QT4011

This is by far the top choice if you live in India.
  • Durapower technology gives this long lasting power.
  • After 1 hour of charging, you get 90 minutes of cordless use.
  • Includes 27 length settings from 0.1-10mm.
  • Self-sharpening titanium blades to shred hair with ease.

This model lasts long and trims well, which is all you can really ask for with these types of products.

What Beard Trimmers do Barbers Use?

Barbers use corded beard trimmers as opposed to cordless ones. This is because corded trimmers have more power and are less susceptible to battery issues that may inevitably occur with their cordless counterparts. Most of the products we have in our top list actually can be plugged in but the power on them is usually slightly less than the high end cordless ones. Furthermore, barbers may use hair shavers that are intended for cutting hair as the tool for trimming customers beards.

Can I use a trimmer to remove pubic hair?

Yes, you can. It comes down to personal preference but you can definitely go this route as long as you are aware that you need to go slow and make smaller passes about 3 inches in length. See our recommendations for products below this question.

Which Trimmer is Best for Pubic Hair?

Since pubic hair is coarse and thick, you need a stronger trimmer to shred the hair and one that is waterproof so that you have the choice to trim in the shower. Here are the top 3 trimmers for pubic hair:

  1. Remington MB4045A
  2. Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 MG7750
  3. Panasonic ER-GB-60K

These three products have the attachments and length settings to be able to trim your pubic hair thoroughly, but you must use caution and go slow with small passes to ensure you don’t cut yourself down there.

Do Trimmers Give a Clean Shave?

No, that is not their purpose as they are ‘trimmers’ and not ‘shavers’. The closest they can get is 0.1mm which is a very short stubble, but it is not at all clean shaven. Some products may have full length electric shaver attachments, but they will not work as well as a dedicated electric shavers. Furthermore, we still recommended a great double edged safety razor if you want a very close shave as they are timeless due to their performance and quality.

Are Trimmers Good For Your Skin?

They are fairly neutral for normal skin types, but if you have sensitive skin a non-hypoallergenic product could have adverse effects. Therefore, if you are one who suffers with very sensitive skin, please see our recommendation for the best hypo-allergenic choice above (the Panasonic Milano ER-GB40-S). And make sure that you are not rushing through the process or making long passes as that will put you at risk of breaking out.

Closing Thoughts

Now you may have noticed that we featured mainly cordless products in our top 7 list. This is because the corded ones are not so much better in terms of power than their cordless counter parts anymore. There once was a time where corded beard clippers were significantly better, but nowadays there are plenty of powerful cordless clippers that are portable and convenient, so we feature those because they are actually the best ones on the market.

We actually tested a few of the famous corded ones, like the Andis T Outliner and the Wahl Peanut, but none of them proved to be anything special in terms of beard trimming except for the fact that they are more powerful than their cordless counterparts.

They just don’t come with enough settings, features and functionality without having to purchase external combs to facilitate the convenience that is required for the modern man.

Furthermore, as long as you learn how to properly trim a beard, you can get the same exact quality that a barber shop would give you except at the comfort of your own bathroom and with a cordless trimmer. And on top of that, you don’t have to pay a cent as you can do it yourself.

But anyway, the next time you’re looking for a quick way to groom your beard, you have to give one of these best beard trimmers a try. We guarantee that you will be more than satisfied. And on a final note, remember to use a beard oil daily, especially after each trim so that you can get optimal results.
